Why Yung Miami's 'Watch Dis' Is Judged Against a 1M-Unit Hit: The Timeline Explained

The short version

Yung Miami's debut solo album 'Watch Dis' came out Oct. 23, 2026, and on Nov. 1 DJ Akademiks put its first week at 9K in a "W or L?" video. The number stings because her lead single "Spend Dat" sold over 1 million units and went No. 1 at three radio formats, according to Universal Music. Billboard's official first-week figure is still unconfirmed here.

Key facts

  • Late April 2026: "Spend Dat" comes out, produced by J. White Did It, the producer behind Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow," according to Miami New Times.
  • Summer 2026: The song goes gold at 500,000 units. Miami New Times called it her first gold record as a solo artist and the fastest of her career in any form. She celebrated on Instagram: "A GOLD SINGLE IN over 2 months."
  • Same stretch: Miami New Times reported that Rihanna FaceTimed her just to sing the song to her, and that Monica danced to it onstage during her arena tour.
  • The chart run: Universal Music says "Spend Dat" hit No. 1 at Urban radio, Rap Airplay and Rhythm radio, peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 for her first solo top 20, and climbed to No. 2 on Hot Rap Songs.

Yung Miami's debut solo album Watch Dis arrived Oct. 23, 2026, and the first-week debate started almost right away. On Nov. 1, DJ Akademiks posted a YouTube video titled "W or L? Akademiks speaks on Yung Miami's 'Watch Dis' selling 9K first week!" The reason that number draws so much heat: the album followed "Spend Dat," a song her label says sold over 1 million units.

Here's how a summer smash turned into a W-or-L argument, with dates.

What we know

The timeline

  • The remixes: An official remix added Lil Baby and Kodak Black, and an international version brought in Davido, Shenseea and Vybz Kartel, per Universal.
  • Oct. 2, 2026: She announces Watch Dis for Oct. 23 and drops two singles the same day: "F You," produced by London On Da Track and sampling Yo Gotti and Meek Mill's "F You," and "2008," produced by J White, with a video.
  • Oct. 23, 2026: Watch Dis is released.
  • Nov. 1, 2026: Akademiks posts his "9K first week" video.

Who said what, on the record

  • Yung Miami (Oct. 2 announcement): "They counted me out, and I heard every bit of it." In the same statement, she said she dropped two singles and a video in one day because she was confident in the music.
  • Akademiks (Nov. 1): His video title puts the album at 9K and asks whether that's a W or an L. YouTube blocked us from viewing the video itself, so we can confirm his number and the framing, but we're not describing his verdict.

Context

The first-week math hits harder because of how big the single got. Universal's announcement quoted Billboard saying "Spend Dat" was the first top 20 hit of her career in any capacity, City Girls included. Miami New Times reported it also gave her the first radio No. 1 of her career, on Billboard's Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rap Airplay charts.

The label sold Watch Dis as a statement. Universal said the title started as a challenge she set for herself when people were questioning her next move, and described the sound as Southern rap and Miami club energy: hard drums, big hooks and slick talk.

Rap fans have watched this happen before: one song blows up on radio, TikTok and Shazam, and that audience doesn't always show up for the full album. A summer hit and the album that follows it don't always draw the same crowd, and that gap is the whole argument right now.

What's unconfirmed

  • The official first-week number. Akademiks' 9K is his figure, not a Billboard or Luminate number. Chart accounts and several outlets have reported a higher total and a Billboard 200 position, but we couldn't open Billboard's chart reporting before publishing, so we're holding those numbers until we can confirm them.
  • The track count. Reports don't agree on how many songs are on the album, so we're leaving that out for now.

What happens next

The next receipt is week two. Where Watch Dis lands on the following Billboard 200, and how far it falls, will show whether the "Spend Dat" crowd is sticking with the album. We'll update this explainer once Billboard's numbers are confirmed.

W or L: is a debut like this a bad start, or just the first chapter for Yung Miami solo?
