Context
The title is a callback. The original Sweet Action came out in 2020, six years before this sequel, as Clash points out. Since then the Kentucky native has picked up six Grammy nominations (Complex's count) and has changed lanes more than once. Clash sums up the latest turn as an "opinion-splitting venture into neo-soul."
That turn was Monica. iHeartRadio describes it as nine R&B-inspired tracks, including a collaboration with James Savage. After it dropped, social media turned Harlow's new sound into a running joke, with fans inventing nicknames that cast him as the white version of famous hip-hop and R&B acts. The talk got louder after Harlow said he "got Blacker" while making the album, per iHeartRadio. In the same comments he said he loves Black music and knew he was skipping a safer route that other white artists have taken.
Bringing in Babyface tells you he isn't backing off that direction. Babyface is an R&B heavyweight whose list of collaborations is long and varied. Complex points out that in 2006 he even produced two tracks during Fall Out Boy's Infinity on High sessions, one of which became the Hot 100 hit "Thnks fr th Mmrs." Based on the iHeartRadio description of the preview, "Too Soon" sounds like it continues where Monica left off.
Friday is crowded, too. Lil Baby's FRESH is also set for Nov. 6, as we covered in Why Lil Baby Says He Never Fell Off Before 'FRESH' on Nov. 6: The Timeline Explained. Two very different records from two artists who share a lot of the same listeners, out on the same day.
What's unconfirmed
- Producers and writers: None of the reports we checked list credits beyond the Babyface feature.
- Singles or videos: No lead single or video has been announced. So far the only preview is Harlow's TikTok clip.
- Formats and tour: Nothing has been said about vinyl, deluxe versions or live dates tied to the EP.
Once the credits and first-week numbers come in, we'll update this story.
Is Babyface the right co-sign for Harlow's R&B era, or do you want rap Jack back?
